Brisingr
Brisingr is the third volume of the Inheritance Cycle, a high fantasy series by Christopher Paolini. It has been scheduled for publication in September 2008. The previous books in the series, Eragon and Eldest, have both been bestsellers.
The series was first planned as a trilogy (named Inheritance Trilogy), but was subsequently announced to be a four part series and the name was changed. Paolini announced this, saying Brisingr would otherwise have been too large.
Regarding Brisingr and the choice of name, Paolini has said:
Brisingr is one of the first words I thought of for this title, and it’s always felt right to me. […] As the first ancient-language word that Eragon learns, it has held particular significance for his legacy as a Dragon Rider. In this new book, it will be revealed to be even more meaningful than even Eragon could have known.
The word ‘Brisingr’ means ‘fire’ in the ancient language of the elves of Alagaësia that all magic is based on.

Roran on the other hand kick some serious ass on the other side of the map and on his way down a story of real strenght and courage showed a new picture of him. All inn all im not going to stop reading because I was not satisfied with the ending of eldest, I going to keep going so I can see what happens to the new courages Roran and if anything else the power of the new cousin-cousin duo.

Im telling you, its katrina. think about it. Remember the first book when he was unconcious near the beginning after garrow was injured? Roran was the man on the beach, Eragon was on the boat with Katrina. He was upset because he lost both his Wife and his cousin. It makes sense doesnt it? I dont think it will be arya. It would make it too complicated, and be too predictable.

Especially since it says that there shouldn’t be a king who doesn’t age or become old, so I don’t think that if Roran becomes king, he won’t get the egg.

BUT I think that there is a slight possibility that the egg will hatch for elva. Just cause. I have a question that maybe one of you can answer….If brom was a dragon rider, why did he not look like an elf? once your dragon dies, do you become human looking again?

Yay 4th book. I mean it was pretty obvious to me one was needed, I think there was just too many things Eragon needed to accomplish in one <1000 page book
What interests me (for now) is the killing at the end of book 3 and this mysterious godly meeting.
I think the death, while possibly being Murtagh, Nasuada or Oromis, Is more likely to be Angela or Elva. These are both relatively important characters and big enough to cause a shock.
I think the obvious choice for the egg is Arya and I am willing to post my reasons if any doubt this.
The god thing is an interesting thought and i have no immeadiate thoughts about where or why but I would guess one of the dwarf gods, possibly Sindri or Helzvog but most probably Guntera.
My last thought is in reference to something briefly mentioned by Oromis in Eldest, he spoke of the “Grey Folk” is it possible Eragon may meet these mysterious folk in an upcoming book?
Anyway… Im sure thats enough to ponder for now post any other thoughts and I would be happy to share my views (im an opinionated person with a lot of free time)

May 20th, 2008 at 11:04 pmthe last egg…it won’t be arya. it won’t be elva. they are already significant to the book in other ways. roran has showed leadership skills and people listen to him so i think he will lead the varden. nasuada will die. vanir will do something…just a thought though. im gangsta… it was only a rumour that eragon would meet a god. i dont think he does beacause they dont exist. the elves have never found proof of their existence and it would change their entire beliefs if they did. as for the egg… my thoughts are with roran if he does not lead the varden. if he does it may be katrina, but most likely i think it will hatch at the end of the fourth book to a random. oromis will die at the hand of murtagh. im certain. i think murtagh finds and attacks ellesmera and oromis and glaedr duel with him in hope of saving the city, seeing as there will be no soldiers left. they’re all gone off to war. and eragon will get back after dropping katrina and roran at the varden, to find glaedr dead and oromis nearly dead. oromis will tell eragon his real name and eragon will pursue murtagh. and finally i think galbatorix has hidden the last egg on vroengard. guarded by tornac, who is not dead.

I really hope that the egg hatches for elva because it could repay her for what eragon accidently made her into. I feel kinda bad for the girl, always growing and saving other people from pain. But I also want to know the deal with the vault of souls, I hope he ( christopher Paolini) puts it in the 3rd book.

May 28th, 2008 at 7:55 amThat was the ‘prediction’ that Solembum was saying, and it was at the Agaeti Blodhren,the blood-oath ceremony, that was held UNDER THE MENOA TREE. The weapon (or gift as it seems) was transformation of Eragon, when he sort of became an elf.
Also, I really don’t think it will be Arya who gets the last egg. She complicates thing too much, especially since she is future elf queen.

But then again there is Murtagh and Thorn - Paolini at some point in the book told us it was Dragon/Rider oppposite sex, so either Thorn is female or he has gone against the book. I don’t know. Lol.
I don’t think it will be Elva either, a) too young, b) too weird! and Angela is more of her
Roran is a good idea for a rider, or a king (can’t remember who posted a comment about a king, sorry), but it will be best if he intro’s a new character in this book and then the new rider is revealed in the last book.
One more Q - will all books printed from now on say ‘The Inheritance Quartology’ instead of ‘Trilogy?’
Ooops - about Angela, she is more of a good side character (like the eccentric woman who makes the book funnier).

Then eragon will go down to the underworld to get her back and will talk to the first riders and they will tell them that brisingr is the word which describes the whole ancient language.

I just read Eragon and Eldest (AGAIN) in the past couple days and Solembum specifically says to look in the ‘roots’ of the Menoa Tree. As for Eragon meeting a god, I don’t think that it’s very likely. I’m assuming that the egg is going to hatch for Arya, but sometime in the 4th book. Have you read the preview thing for Brisingr yet? I think that the Ra’zac will escape, but they’ll find Katrina.

i personally think that either Dras Leona or Gilead will be the first major battle. Dras Leona would make sense because once the razac are attacked the city would be easy to take. The Gilead option gives eragon a reason to be near Du Weldenvarden. once the elves take that a large part of Galbatorixes army forcing troops away from the vardens attack in the south. Also, somewhere along the line i think that Tierm will be sieged. Paulini has mentioned how prepared it is for attack too many times to let it hang. what are you guyses thoughts?

Christopher Paolini has inspired me to write about a seven-year-old kid with a stone and he finds an egg and combines the stone and egg together and the egg hatches and a dragon comes out, and then, later on in the book, Tiranious turns fourteen (yeah, WAY later in the book) and kis dragon, Kiru, dies because he (Kiru) was shot by milions of arrows. There was also this thing called an alternate and if you die, your alternate lives, but if your alternate dies… you die too.
I don’t think Roran will get the egg because I think he will lead the vardon, or become king. A king shouldn’t be immortal, so someone hman will have to be it. Also, he wouldn’t like it because he would live longer than Katrina, and he loves her. ALSO…he needs to lead the Carvahall people to a safe place, and won’t be able to train while he leads them and represents them. I think a new rider would be better, so we don’t know what they are capable of, but elva seems good enough. Anyway, elva wolud be a good rider because she can

The weapon under the menoa tree is not the dragon gift. Solembum said that he needed to look under the ROOTS of the menoa tree. There is more than 1 definition of roots. It could be buried under the tree, which is unlikely, more likely it is rhunoen, the old elf blacksmith. After all the roots of the tree is the elves. They planted it. Rhuneon makes a sword for every rider, so perhaps she will decide to make one for him after Zar’roc got taken by murtagh. As for the vault of souls at the rock of kuthian, that would be at helgrind moutain. Eragon goes there when he can’t beat anyone, including murtagh. He speaks his name and the vault opens to give him souls of power. That is probably how he was defeated by murtagh and is less powerful than galbatorix, because they both have visited the vault. As for the last dragon egg, I believe it to be arya’s. If it hatches for her and mates with saphira, remember what was said how dragons and riders share feelings? Well i think that when arya’s dragon and saphira mate, arya and eragon will share the same feelings. As for the vision in eragon, where 2 people leave on a boat and one person is crying, and eragon sees two dragons overhead. That is most likely saphira and arya’s dragon. With arya and eragon leaving for the land the elves said to have came from. The person crying is likely to be roran, who is hung in grief by eragon’s leaving. Roran will be king. Eragon and Arya and their dragons will go to the new land with the other elfs. That is where angel’s prediction where he would leave and never return came from. Orik will be the dwarf king. This here is just my opinion, but I think nausuda will die, and the new leader of the varden might be elva, after eragon removes the spell on her.

AT the end if they did leave forever and go back to the land of the elves, ergon mate would have to be an elf to want to go anyway. I hope so. I think its true that when the razac eat peolpe, they put the rest of the persons energy into the vault, and thats how galbatorix gains power every year. He takes his power from the souls. In solembums fortune, he says “When all is lost” right?….doesn’t it fit that it means when eragon has no power and has given up hope? I think it fits anyway. Also…I think broms sword is under the menoa tree because his dragon was blue to, thats why her name was saphira. SO………… Since its the only sword that fits eragon, its the one he will find.

I really don’t get that because Roran becomes king and Eragon leaves Alagaeisa forever, but how ould he leave while he’s dead?

I would kind of like to focus on how the army movement will play out here because in my view this is a majorly important part of the structure of the book.
Wise 1 has said they believe that the fights will come to Gilead, Dras-Leona and Teirm I agree in the most part. The elves will attack Gilead because they are in the north area of the map and the Varden will attack Dras-Leona because the are south this makes sense.
However… I doubt Galbatorix will fight until book 4 because the “Goodies” will not assault Illirea/Uru’baen until then. Which leaves Murtagh and “Laughing enemy” to hold off the “Goodies” themselves. I think Murtagh will go north to fight the elves and “Laughing enemy” will go south to fight Eragon (Mainly because Murtagh will not want to fight Eragon again and Eragon has to meet “Laughing enemy”)
I do not know how these battles will result but i am curious as to who will attack/defend Teirm because neither side has the leaders to spare really, and Paolini would not write a battle without at least a couple of recognisable characters.

let me elaborate… eragon never knew of his father or what had happened to his mother in the first book. he asks brom if he knew his mother. brom said he knew her enough to miss her when she was gone… hmmm… take note of that.
in the second book eragon is talking with oromis about his scar and he pays reference to murtagh’s scar. then oromis pauses and gives him a curious look then acts as nothing had happened and keeps talkin… so obviously oromis had known murtagh and eragon were brothers and was considering the fact that eragon had compared himself to his unknown brother. but because ti would have inflicted upon eragon’s training he chose not to say anything… take note…
at the end of that book murtagh says in the ancient language that eragon is his brother and they had the same mother. we assume that eragon is morzan’s son. as does everyone…take note…
now… nobody knew where selena went when she left morzan’s castle to have eragon. except garrow of course. not even oromis…?
another fact is that you cannot lie in the ancient language. but what about eragon’s poem? he lied. but no he didn’t he spoke the truth because that’s what he believed. murtagh believed eragon was his brother and son of morzan so he could say it without it being the truth.
my thoughts are brom was in love with selena… selena and brom had a secret love child didn’t they….?
when the pregnancy became impossible to hide from morzan selena called upon one of her closest friends and lover… brom came to her and she confessed herself to him. telling him the child was his and asked his advice. she also tells him that morzan has left to pursue the thief that stoll saphira’s egg. he sends her to her brother in carvahall and tells her he will pursue the thief and race morzan to the egg and when he succeeds he will watch over the child.
and so he does.
oromis could not have known about the pregnancy unless somebody told him. who told him? brom did.
eragon is brom’s child.
murtagh is the son of murtagh and selena
murtagh and eragon are both son’s of selena
but eragon may be the son of brom
that was blagden’s riddle.
or i have another theory if people want it. brom had a love child with selena. morzan found out that murtagh is brom’s not his and hates the kid forever. which would explain him throwing his sword at murtagh.
but i think brom is eragon’s dad. there are loads of hints.

it wasa also written that brom begged the black smith in ellesmera to make him a new sword cos he lost his. how did he lose his….? i think that when your dragon is killed the elves take your sword away from the rider and i think brom begged for a new one because of this. i think that his sword which is saphire blue is being guarded by one of the two families guarding the two swords. one family will be long distant relatives of the chick who became the menoa tree. solembum says look under the roots of the menoa tree. even a family tree needs roots. could this be where his sword went. to a relative of a bush…
also if roran becomes a rider… will he lay down the hammer or will he continue to wield it. hope i’ve enlightened ya.
and i don’t think elva is a huge part. i think she’s in this book to show what kind of person eragon is. he’s distraught to here that he’s cursed her not blessed her. so it shows the depth of his love for an average joe. it shows that he truly cares about the people of alagaesia.

I read the paragraphs about brom being eragons father on another site to, and I think tis true. I think Saphira knows but was told to keep it a secret untill eragon was mature enought to carry it. I really think Arya will get the egg because then when her dragon mates with Saphira, they will have their bond aswell. Don’t for get about the dream eragon had about the silver boat, a man and female holding arms, someone crying on the beach, and 2 dragons in the air flying. The person on the beach is obviously Roran, which means that he won’t be a rider because then the dragon would stay with him. Arya, on the other hand is the female gonig on the boat, its HER green dragon, its HER who falls in love with eragon. Yep it all fits, any way, the rider would have to be a girl since their was a girl going on the boat. Also, Paolini said he was going to kill off a main charactor, which I think will be Oromis and Gladedr, its sad I know , but they have to die. They can’t live to long if the empire will attack Ellesmera. He has to die, like brom has to die, in order for eragon to think for himself and grow up.

After all the riders magic is the same color as his/her dragon. Eragon’s is blue, Murtag is red and in the book you read that arya’s is green. this above all else should indicate she will be the next rider. As for the sword I have no idea if it will be brom’s old sword. The book just sayed he lost it, not where. But I think that since you know the menon tree is alive. I think the tree is guarding it and will give the sword to eragon when he returns to the elven city.

Its definately not gonna be elva cause as soon as eragon undoes the blessing/curse she’ll be just like a normal person again. Anyway shes far to young and it would take years to train her up to ability. Arya however is already skilled with magic and the sword therefore she will need hardly any training only about 6months untill her dragon matures and can breave fire.

Brom being eragons dad is a good possibility, i think brom knew he was
his son and stayed near eragon to make sure he was safe, but i dont understand
the secrecy once they became close friends.
Ferthermore i dont think eragon will have to kill mertag cuz he will kill
galbatorix releasing mertag from his controll, but if mertag contiues to
learn from galbatorix he may turn evil(he sure did seem to like his new
abilitys at the end of book 2)

And there is no evidence because you wouldn’t give something like that away too early - it would take away the surprise. I reckon that Murtagh will turn good for his half brother at the end - a bit like Darth Vader turning on the Dark Lord at the last moment. Also Brom being Eragon’s dad is just too nice and happy and i don’t think that this story is going to go down that line. That would be like saying that Snape would end up becoming friends with Harry - nice maybe but the story wouldn’t have been anywhere as good.

Wow alot of stuff since i last look which was like yesterday lol.
hmmm….theres not much new to talk about alot has beeen said here already
i just wanna say 1 overall thing.
so here we go:
Eragon___will find broms old sword under the roots of the menoa tree (this is either a real tree or a family tree or something)
Roran___will become king of alagaesia
Arya___will become the new rider of the green dragon and will then leave alagaesia forever with Eragon(remember Eragons dream where he sees two ppl walking together on a boat and sailing away with 2 dragons flying above)
Orik___will become the next dwarf king…most likely wwill take alot of struggles but after Saphira heals the Crystal Star thing they will think more of Dragons and Riders and join Orik
Murtagh___will in the end turn against Galbatorix but be killed in the process…(again with the dream…there were only 2 riders which meens murtagh and Galbatorix will die)
Or…Murtaghs dragon will die which meens he cant go on the boat to the elve lands or something
Orimis and Glaedr___im not so sure…i believe they will teach eragon some powerfull magic and way to equal his strength with Galbatorix, however, they will both die in this book
Katrina___will live and marry Roran and be queen
Elva___will have the curse taken from her…i dont know what will happen then but i think she might die
Nasuada___will lead the Vardan strongly and with the help of the elves and dwarfs will defeat Galbatorix’s army
Razac___will hopefull die but i think it will be kinda run out…meaning the first chance Eragon and Roran get they wont be killed
Vault of Souls___where the Razac send the souls of those they have killed…Galbatorix and Murtagh use the power of the souls to continuasly get more powerful…Eragon will also use it
Angela___i really have no idea but she might be the one to die at the end of the book like C.P. said….she would be a big lose but wouldnt completely destroy the flow of the story
Brom___is Eragons father! (remember he told Saphira many secrets to only tell when Eragon is mature enough or needs it badly) aslo (than riddle Bladgen that talking bird or something said also proves it…i can remember how it goes now but it relates to them…i think some1 said it before so just look around)

Everyone seems to have forgotten about the crystal that was mentioned in the one group of mountains i believe this is the center of magc and where Eragon will go to find answers. There is a very good chance that brom is eragon’s father simply because he stayed near. the sword will most likely be the first riders that Eragon finds it would hold far greater meaning than brom’s. the next rider cannot be a dwarf as mentioned above because they were not included in the ritual although it was a nice try. Brisingr which controls fire controls an element look at the greek beliefs fire water air earth they are the most powerful spells or at least that is the trend. Eragon will be able to control Fire far better than other riders simply becasue it was the word that came to him first showing he has a link with it. The reason murtagh and Galbatorix appear so strong is because you are comparing apples and oranges. It states that all riders strength rises over time so galbatorix simply grows stronger now like anything else there are shortcuts enter the power murtagh has or the scarier idea galbatorix knows speels that can have incredibly profound effect and yet take very little energy. The grey folk mentioned in the second book have to be found i am guessing that the “laughing enemy” is a renegade grey person. Magic in alagesia has two categories in my mind wild and tamed the elves and mages and rideers use tamed while there are certain places that contain wild magic which is more potent than tamed magic. I have read both books in this series upwards of 100 times a piece i am what you could call a fanatic and these are the only things that could fit into the story and make it flow the way it has so far. as for who will die it is going to be katrina or roran it would spark something in roran and arya is to powerful of a character to kill off.

In the chapter ‘Dragon Tales’ Chris says Selena “tearfully begged Garrow and Marian to raise him” then “her pleas had grown increasingly desperate until they finally agreed”. So for me I start to wonder what sort of environment was the child coming into - doesn’t sound very nice to me. What was wrong with the father???

If suddenly brom was watching over a boy who came out of no where, people would start to talk. Also, brom wouldn’t have had a chance to mind eragon, because he was off huning down morzan for his revenge.

THAT’S why selena ran away… to get away from morzan. Either way, it couldn’t have been galbatorix who was eragon’s dad, ’cause galbatorix turned evil just a few years before eragon was born. Morzan’s always been evil.

no ofense, JohnTheGreat, but (yes, i know, just because u say no ofense doesn’t meen its not offensiv) but I think angela the herbalist will stay alive and brom isn’t eragon’s dad. I don’t think Galbatorix will die in Brisingr, it states on the wikipedia that he dies in bk 4.

Yes i agree that Galbatorix is not Eragons father, in fact i would go so far to say that some of character relationship are even star wars like and i believe that this series has played out very similarly.
I believe that Morzan is Eragons father. I am probably wrong but the Eragon-Galbatorix (Luke-Emperor) Relationship or even the Eragon-Brom (Luke-Obiwan) is just a little sad
Even the storylines are much the same too.
An old peace-keeping order get wiped out by a “bad guy” With the help of a young member of order. Helpers son is hero of story. Is mentored by someone close to father who dies so goes to old order master who is hidden. Sees friends going into battle and leaves to aid them only to find out the terrible truth of his parentage.
Eragon seems to be Star Wars with more characters.

I just think it would be a bit pathetic if Murtagh killed Galbatorix when he was torturing Eragon and Died soon after.

Thats all im doing. Listen guys, its possible Broms eragons dad, and its possible he’s not. Its possible morzan really is eragons father, but again its possible he;s not. WE don’t really know do we?
And we won’t know untill the next books come out. This site is to share what our opinions on the book, and its cool what you guys are saying. Who knows, maybe Galbatorix is eragonsfather, but its highly inlikely he is…..He didn’t marry selena, or anyone, he wanted to rule by himself, right? If ge did marry, murtah would know because he lived with him when his father was alive, didn’t he? If he is his father murtah would have told him he was at the battle.
Angela,….she….shes very interesting, and I don’t THINK will be the one to die because shes not a main, or big enough charactor. Paolini said he would kill off a major charactor right? But ….its very possible she might die, even if it doesn’t really fit in.
I don’t THINK galbatorix will die in book 4 cause hes the bad guy, though its possible murtah and galbatoriz will get a great deal weaker if the vault of souls IS where they get their energy. But if it is where they get their energy, why would eragon have to speak his name to it? I don’t get it…….
though, it is possible that galbatorix will die in book 3(but very unlikely) because he might meet eragon, die, passing his crown to murtah. OR…he could just keep sending murtah out, and wait in the castle untill the finnal battle (probably in the end of the 3ed book, or in the 4th book) when all 4 dragon riders will meet,including the green dragon, which will probably be aryas, and they will fight there. Mind you, eragon will have finished his training and will be more powerful.
The reasons I think arya will get the egg because )yes i’ve said this millions of times) is becasue as an elf, she already has the powers, or skills as you might like to call them, that took eragon along time to master. Having to elfs can be quite an advantage since elves are very powerful when they put thier minds to it (hehehe). And finally, IN ERAGONS DREAM! it shows two people on a silver boat, arm in arm, someone crying on the beach, and two draons in the sky. The persom with eragon on the baot is arya, since its a woman on the baot, ALSO, it should be an elf in order for her to agree to leave the land to go to the labd of the elves right?
Its roran on the beach crying, because if he was the riderr he would leave also.
Roran will most likely become king, marry katrina, and let the elves and dwarfs come out of hiding. Poalini wouldn’t wan’t roran to become a rider because then he would jave to write about training him, which would take a lnog time. And I don’t really wan’t roran to become a rider anyway,
I don’t know if this is true or not, but someone mentioned aryas colour being green? If this is true, she would obviuosly get the egg, and since she is an elf, a princess, the elf family with the sword will happily (well maybe not happily) give her herrightful sword, where she can kick butt with, Am I right?
Mind you though, these are my THOUGHTS! they are what I THINK!! Im not saying its gaing to happen, no one can because the books haven’t come out yet. But I hope its going to happen.

But the forging of Eragon was more than the sum of places and personal experiences. Itegral to the saga’s creation was the close-knit Paolini family and their support of Christopher’s literary ambitions. The family always encouraged a love of education, and Talita Paolini, a Montessori-trained teacher, homeschooled Christopher and Angela. That self-desipline was vital for a budding writer. Christopher began research and preperations for the book in the fall of 1998, when he was fourteen years old, and at fifteen he began writing the book, the same age as the saga’s hero, he began writing in earnest.
“My initial inspiration was a boy who finds a dragon egg and it hatches, and the boy and his dragon go on a series of adventures. I had previously tried writing stories, but they always flatlined after about five or six pages. So before I started Eragon, i read as many books as I could on writing, on constructing plots and creating characters. I did a fair amount of research, almost as if I were doing an historical novel. I read a lot of Norse and Icelandic mythology, Beowulf and things like that. I was trying to create a pseudo-European world, but with its own history and internal logic.”
Paolini spent a month plotting not just one book-length tale, but a trilogy he christened Inheritance. (His efforts including inventing different languages for his imaginary world.) Only after he decided what would happen in each book did he begin writing book one: Eragon. The typical workday started each morning closing his door and sitting at his desk for “solid burts” of writing that would be interrupted only for lunch and an hour before exercise before dinner. He zealously guarded the work, not sharing a page with his parents or sister, who became increasingly curious what went into Christopher’s word processor as the weeks and months went by.
With words he built a world, and some of his imaginings were spectacular sights he always wished to have seen in a movie. One such set piece was the hollow cone of Farthen Dur, which was ten miles high and wide and held the mile-high white marble city of Tronjheim, its ceiling topped by a gigantic red star sapphire sixty feet across and carved into the shape of a rose.
Another fantasy to dream up the most unusual dragon ever, and from his imagination sprung Saphira, who was not only female but had blue scales like faceted, gleaming gems. “I used blue because I’m partially color-blind and see more blue in the world than most people. An optometrist said I even see shades of purple as blue. Blue and purple are the colors of royalty, and Saphira is nothing, if not regal. Eragon has a special relationship with Saphira — they would die for each other. I was trying to make Saphira the best friend anyone could have, and I thought, it would be nice to have a brilliant, sapphire blue dragon who could eat anyone you didn’t like and fly around on.”
A year after his began, Christopher finished book one of Inheritance finally had something to show his efforts. “It was terrible, awful,” he recalled. “The story was there but the writing needed work. I sepnt another year and rewrote the book, fleshing out the characters and dialouge. And at the end of the second year, I handed my parents the manuscript.
