Inheritance Cycle
Inheritance Cycle (formerly known as Inheritance Trilogy) is a best selling fantasy series by the author Christopher Paolini. The series consists of four books, two of which have been published to date: Eragon and Eldest. The third book, Brisingr has been scheduled for September 2008.
Paolini began work on Eragon, the first book of the series, around 1999 after graduating from high school. The book was first published by Paolini International in 2002, when it failed to take off. It became a bestseller after having been published by Alfred A. Knopf in 2003.
The second book, [Eldest], was published in 2005 by Knopf and became an instant bestseller doe to the worldwide reputation of Eragon.
The series is high fantasy, set in the fictional world of Alagaësia. The world is a much darker place after the fall of Dragon Riders, who were an organization of humans that had bonded with dragons, and kept the world at peace.
As the seris starts, the reader learns that Galbatorix, an evil dragon rider, is now in power and holds the world in his iron grip. [Eragon], the main character of the series, finds a dragon egg and bonds with a dragon, becoming the first dragon rider in years.
The works have been criticized for drawing on the plots of both Star Wars and Lord of the Realms. In addition, many of the creatures of Alagaësia, such as elves, dwarves and dragons, have been made popular by established fantasy literature.

April 14th, 2008 at 11:09 amYou note “The world is a much darker place after the fall of Dragon Riders, who were an organization of humans that had bonded with dragons, and kept the world at peace.”
June 5th, 2008 at 2:01 amHowever, the bond was originally made between elves and dragons after a war which had threatened to wipe out both the races. Humans were only added to the spell to join the elves and dragons after this, and the majority of riders were elven.
Galbatorix should die atleast in this book…. Coz, i dont want another sequel of this….
June 10th, 2008 at 2:22 pmwhy wouldnt you want another book that way youll finish the books and wish there were more!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
June 12th, 2008 at 10:49 ami want to know what happens NOW! even then why does there have to be a foruth book? we will just have to wait even longer! it takes him to long to finish the books!!!!
June 19th, 2008 at 8:08 pmPatience is a virtue ajb. If Paolini did not take as long as he has to write the books, they would not have been so richly detailed and would have been far less interesting to read.
Try reading a different series to pass the time.
June 22nd, 2008 at 3:39 pmi agree with Heresiarch read another series i persony recomend the Sword of Truth Series by Terry Goodkind, The Belgariad, mallorean, elenium and the tumli series in that order by David Eddings
June 23rd, 2008 at 3:58 amI think that the last egg, the emerald coloured egg will be hatched by Rowan as he has proved himself as a warrior and it makes sense. Another Possibility is that Arya will hatch the Emerald egg.
July 4th, 2008 at 1:49 pmI think elva will get the Egg because saphira left her mark on her
July 6th, 2008 at 4:08 pmok i was wrong but That would still be cool if it hatched for Elva but after reading all the chats i now see that its clearly obviouse that Arya will get the egg
July 8th, 2008 at 12:18 pmWURRRRRD YO… I WANT ARYA TO GET THE RED EWGG-
July 9th, 2008 at 11:36 amBTW UR ALLL R OBSSSESED AND HAV NO LIFE
July 9th, 2008 at 11:36 amI can’t wait for Brisingr to come out in September. My favorite book so far was Eldest because it was exciting and there was a lot of fighting in it and it was also surprising that Murtagh turned to Galbidorax’s army. I hope that they publish the movie of Eldest. I will definatly watch it if they do.
July 10th, 2008 at 1:36 pmFirstly I have to say i’m a massive fan of this series but I have to say I wish it stayed as a book because the movie was the biggest piece of crap ever made and I can’t believe C.P. signed off on it.. what was he thinking? It should of been epic but it was woeful.
July 15th, 2008 at 7:37 amSigh. 4 books? That might be too much. But, it’s still a very good series. The movie on the other hand was crap. They left out so much, I hardly recognized the plot line.
Otherwize, can’t wait for Brisingr. Even though the final book probably won’t be released until 2012. -.- Or maybe late 2011. Since, of course, Eldest was released in 05 and Eragon was released in 03. Paolini probably got a writer’s block. A 2 year writer’s block
July 19th, 2008 at 1:35 amEragon and Eldest are 2 of my favourite books
July 20th, 2008 at 11:08 amI cannot wait until brisingr is out.
The Eragon film was awful and didnt stick to the storyline of the book much at all.
I agree. I hope Arya gets the other egg.
How is it that none of you see who eragon’s real father was .the red rider was wrong. think back. examine the clues. How brom love eragon’s mother. And how it must have broken him to know that his love was her doom
July 27th, 2008 at 1:40 amIt was obviously Morzan…okay, so I DIDN’T see it coming, but it all makes sense! I think so, at least. I think Murtahg-however you spell it-is pretty cool. Mean and rude, selfish and decieving, but, hey! He’s got the red dragon! I like the red dragon!
July 30th, 2008 at 10:32 pmI’m just talking to myself now…anyone? Anybody actually read this???
BROM IS NOT HIS DAD!!!!!!! we might want him to be but it has to be morzan. this makes eragon question his morals and others question eragon as well w/ brom as his dad everything would be too easy
July 31st, 2008 at 3:49 pmyh but it would be easy to say morzans his dad just coz murtagh said it in the ancient language but it would be clever if cp does turn the story to being brom as eragons farther coz it would answer a lot of questions fro the book
August 10th, 2008 at 8:54 amvery very nice story…
August 20th, 2008 at 2:45 amBrom is Eragon’s dad, as the white raven said Murtagh and Eragon shared one parent, which I take to be their mother, and Murtagh’s dad was Morzan and mother Selina, thus Selina and Brom were also in love and so Eragona nd Murtagh are half-brothers. Arya must get the Green egg because she already knows everything about dragons (from time with Eragon and Saphira) and she is highly advanced in magic and fighting. And, I believe the green dragon will be male and Saphira will eventualyl become the mother of his child, also making Arya fall in love with Eragon and everything ending happily. Listen to the riddles guys, they help a lot.
August 24th, 2008 at 9:41 pmi agree all about arya but not w/ the brom being his dad
August 31st, 2008 at 1:37 pmbrom was like the dad he didnt have which is what made him so important
I’ve really enjoyed both your books so far, am amazed at the wealth of
detail. Personally I like the fact that the “world” of Alagaesia is
similar to Middle Earth in terms of its races and their cultures. It
makes this type of fantasy world seem like a real and consistent “place”.
There the similarity ends, however, because your story is unique.
Thank you so much for creating this wonderful series of books, and I hope
many more will flow from your pen (or your computer) in the future.
I’d love to know what the 4th book in the Inheritance Cycle will be called.
September 2nd, 2008 at 6:42 amBest wishes from Down Under.
wot happend all the other comments?
September 2nd, 2008 at 11:17 amActually it is totalyl logical that Brom would be his dad as it is called “The Inheritance Cycle”. Morzan was Murtagh’s father and he inherited a dragon AND a sword him. Selena was his mother. But again the white Raven says a riddle abot one and two and mentions Eragon’s father. My point being that Murtagh got a Red Dragon like Morzan’s…So it is only logical to assume that Eragon got a Blue Dragon like his father’s, presumably Brom in this case, and he later inhets Brom’s Sword.
September 2nd, 2008 at 8:29 pmno offence but get a life
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:09 amjust wait 4 the goddamn book
September 3rd, 2008 at 2:21 amI cracked the code and I get two mini-flamers telling meget a life and wait for the book. Haha. It’s not my fault you two happened to OVERLOOK what was totally obvious. But yes, only time will tell as the truth is ONLY in the book. But I still stand by my ideas as they, at the moment, make the most sense. Until you two come up with something better, I might suggest you quit badmouthing others. ^^
September 4th, 2008 at 4:48 pmI agree with the other comments on the movie it was one of the worst adaptations of a book i have ever seen i am glad i read the books first otherwise i never would have bothered at all. Christopher made a huge mistake in allowing that horrible excuse for a movie to be affiliated with his book. The lead actor playing Eragon had the no more personality than a block of wood. The other casting was just as bad. I disagree with the comments about LOTR these books may have dwarves and elves, but they have a much different feel to them than the Tolkien books. Paolini is a talented writer and i hope he will continue with other books after the Inheritance books are finished.
September 5th, 2008 at 1:00 amThe movie was rubbish but the book of eragon was the best Ive ever read, eldest was better and im sure the 3rd will be the best
I hope that after inheritance he writes anoh series maybe based in Alagaesia at a different time or maybe a complete new world that would be awsome
September 8th, 2008 at 1:00 pmim love your books i’v read eldest 8 times im not joking
September 11th, 2008 at 10:38 amEldest and Eragon are actually really good books but i’m going to have to agree ‘again’ with the others about the movie. Didn’t really go well and it sucked bad. I doubt i can sleep tonight with the release of brinsingr tomorrow!!!
September 19th, 2008 at 6:31 amI am sitting here waiting for 10:00 when the bookstore opens an I can go pick up my book!! I feel like I have waited forever for these books. Paolini did an incredible job with these books. In my opinion he is a literary genius considering his age and experience. To be compared with LOTR even in a negative way is pretty impressive. His series does have some similarities in terms of Character types, however, that is pretty well where it ends. This series is original, well written and something that I could read over and over. I am excited for a 4th book, even though he is a terribly slow writer! It just means it last longer!
I would have to agree however that the movie was easily the worst adaptation of a book that I have ever had the unfortunate favor to have to sit through. It was an atrocity and I have had to assure many people that the books are nothing like the movie. It is unfortunate that CP allowed his work to be trampled in this way! Anyways… gonna get ready and pick up my book! YAY!
September 20th, 2008 at 11:55 am“To be compared with LOTR even in a negative way is pretty impressive”
You’re right, and “Plagiarism is the greatest form of admiration”
But plagiarism is plagiarism. Which shows how unoriginal large parts of the first book were. Its like he followed every plotline from Star Wars, decided to throw in some LOTR creatures.
I’ll give him this, he was young at the time, but come on, remember that other 17 year-old chic who got in trouble for plagiarism?
Thankfully, Mr. Paolini is becoming a better writer (who wouldn’t when thrust onto the world stage).
I anticipate the third book, but with an open mind.
